The St. Andrew's Society of Washington D.C. meets the charitable and educational purposes of its ancient charter through the Washington Scots Charity & Education Fund. The annual awarding of substantial grants to Scottish and American scholars in need of financial support is one of the Society's primary philanthropic pursuits and the keystone of efforts to live its motto: "Relieve the Distressed." Proceeds from the Tartan Ball, including those from the Silent Auction, benefit this Fund, which has enabled many talented students to further their higher education in the United States, Scotland, and further afield. The Tartan Ball has been held annually for over 60 years and throughout this history the Society has benefited from its relationships with a range of generous donors. Members, sponsors, businesses, and artisans who support the Society's charitable outreach generously contribute each year; this year the Silent Auction is supported by a large number of donors. A partial list of items committed thus far includes: Jewelry, Fashion, and Collectibles
